The Best Road Cycling Routes from Bright

By Camp Crusty Team15 June 2024

Bright is often called the cycling capital of Australia, and for good reason. The roads radiating out from this Alpine village offer some of the most spectacular cycling in the country. Here are our favourite routes, all starting from Camp Crusty.

Mount Buffalo (40km return, challenging) — The climb to Mount Buffalo plateau is a rite of passage for Australian road cyclists. The 20-kilometre ascent averages 4.5% gradient through stunning forest, emerging above the tree line to granite boulders and panoramic views. The descent is equally thrilling — just watch your speed on the corners.

Tawonga Gap and Back (60km loop, challenging) — This classic loop heads out of Bright toward Harrietville, climbs the steep Tawonga Gap (some sections at 10%+), descends to Mount Beauty, and returns via the gentle Kiewa Valley. The views from the top of Tawonga Gap down to Mount Beauty are breathtaking.

Murray to Mountains Rail Trail to Myrtleford (50km return, easy) — Perfect for a relaxed day ride. This sealed, car-free trail winds through the Ovens Valley past farms, vineyards, and small towns. Stop at Myrtleford for lunch at one of the excellent cafes before rolling back to Bright.

Harietville Out and Back (28km return, moderate) — A popular shorter ride along the Great Alpine Road to the charming hamlet of Harrietville. The route follows the Ovens River with gentle gradients and stunning valley views. Reward yourself with a pie at the Harrietville bakery before heading home.

All rides start from Camp Crusty's front gate. Our bike wash station and secure storage are available for all guests.
