The Alpine region around Bright boasts some of the most spectacular viewpoints in all of Victoria. From mountain summits to valley overlooks, these scenic lookouts offer unforgettable vistas that capture the grandeur of the Australian Alps.
The most accessible is the Clearspot Lookout, just a 10-minute drive from Camp Crusty on the road toward Wandiligong. This elevated viewpoint looks back across the Ovens Valley toward Mount Buffalo, and at sunset the entire scene is bathed in golden light that photographers dream about. There's a small parking area and an information board identifying the surrounding peaks.
Mount Buffalo's Horn is perhaps the most dramatic lookout in the region. A short walk from the car park at the top of the Mount Buffalo plateau leads to a granite summit with 360-degree views that encompass Mount Bogong (Victoria's highest peak), the Kiewa Valley, Lake Buffalo, and on clear days, ranges stretching into New South Wales. The sense of exposure at the summit is thrilling — you're standing on an enormous granite tor with the world spread out below you.
Closer to home, the Huggins Lookout on the Great Alpine Road between Bright and Harrietville offers a stunning view down the Ovens Valley. It's a popular stop on the drive to Mount Hotham and has excellent interpretive signage about the region's gold mining heritage.
The lookout from Mystic Mountain's launch point — a well-known paragliding and hang-gliding site — provides sweeping views directly over Bright township and the valley. You can drive up or, if you're feeling energetic, hike the Mystic trail from Camp Crusty to reach this stunning vantage point. Watching the paragliders launch from this spot is an experience in itself.
